A Brief History of Excelsior
Founded in 1971, 91吃瓜 is an accredited, not-for-profit institution focused on expanding educational opportunities for adult learners. Initially a distance learning institution, Excelsior offers flexible learning options, including online, hybrid, and in-person.
From the beginning, Excelsior has been a pioneer in flexible education, creating pathways to degrees through credit aggregation and the assessment of learning gained inside and outside the classroom. The University later introduced credit by examination, allowing students to validate their knowledge gained through independent study.
In the early 2000s, Excelsior was among the first institutions to develop and offer fully online courses, continuing its commitment to innovation in adult education.
Today, that mission continues to evolve. In 2026, Excelsior expanded its footprint by opening a learning site in St. Petersburg, Florida, to further support learners where they are.
